LESSB/APS Work Together in Juneteenth Events

Lubbock’s Juneteenth Celebration was held on June 15th this year, starting with a free breakfast at Mae Simmons Community Center. All Lubbock senior citizens (age 62 and over) were invited, with a total of 42 attending.

At this breakfast, APS Supervisor Ernie Morin gave a brief presentation on the role that Adult Protective Services plays in supporting community seniors and disabled adults. LESSB board member Kathleen Mawe and APS working-while-training supervisor Nickie Morin greeted attendees, answered questions, passed out brochures and promotional items, and assisted where needed. Walmart on South Loop 289 provided $30 gift cards for the event. Guests voiced their appreciation for all the valuable information that was shared in both the presentation and informally.

Following the breakfast and Juneteenth Parade, LESSB and APS jointly staffed a table at the StarCare Specialty Health System heath fair, held under a tent at Mackenzie Park. Kathleen Mawe again represented LESSB at the table and caseworkers Latecha Doggett and Trinity Huckabee represented APS. Brochures and promotional items were available for the 87 attendees who stopped by the booth.  Persons who expressed concerns about abuse, neglect or exploitation were encouraged to contact APS.

This is the third year for APS and LESSB to join together in a Juneteenth project. We would like to thank LESSB board member Pat Francis-Johnson for her assistance with setting this up. Pat is also a member of the Lubbock Juneteenth Committee. And thanks to Kathleen Mawe for organizing our participation.
