Our History

Llano Estacado Silver Star Board was formed in 2009 to assist clients of Adult Protective Services in Lubbock and surrounding counties in areas where funding was not otherwise available. LESSB is an all-volunteer board, consisting of 12-15 members with diverse backgrounds—all who have an interest or experience in working with the elderly. LESSB has no paid staff. Instead we liaison with Adult Protective Service’s Community Engagement Specialist, who attends meetings as a non-voting member. Meetings are held on a monthly basis, although many decisions are made through an online voting process.

We started small in 2009, with around $1,200 collected from selling meat at a special event. For several years, a Casino Night was our main fundraiser for the year. Over the past several years we have been successful in raising funds through grants and donations and small events. Since 2015 we have funded over $310,000 in client requests, over $42,000 in 2024 alone. Over 88% of our budget goes directly to helping APS clients. We have funded needs from as small as $6.00 for a meal while waiting on further assistance, to thousands of dollars. In addition, we provide moral support to APS caseworkers who are on the front lines of the battle against elder abuse every day.

Our Board members also work with APS in providing education to the community about elder abuse and related topics. These education programs include both speaking to specific groups and holding events for the general public.

LESSB is often the last resort to helping APS clients. Government programs may not pay for a need due to lack of funding or budget available, or due to regulations that do not allow them to fund a particular item. After looking for government funding, APS caseworkers search out other non-profits and organizations that have expertise in funding particular areas. After those resources are explored, Llano Estacado Silver Star Board stands prepared to answer the call. Our goal is to fund 100% of legitimate requests that have been brought to us, no matter how large or how small.
